To address this issue and protect consumers, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) took a proactive step by instituting the Hallmarking Scheme in India in the year 2000. When it comes to purchasing gold jewellery, ensuring its authenticity and quality is paramount. This is where hallmarking plays a crucial role. Hallmarked gold signifies that the jewellery has been certified by a recognized assaying or hallmarking centre. A hallmark is a small stamp or symbol applied to the gold item, typically indicating its Karat or purity level. This stamp serves as a mark of authenticity and quality assurance.
UNDERSTANDING HALLMARK SYMBOLS
Hallmark symbols typically include the BIS logo along with a numeric code representing the purity of the gold and the identification mark or number of the hallmarking centre. 'Karat' is a unit used to measure gold purity and indicates the gold percentage in a piece of jewellery. Here are the purity categories of hallmarking:
• 14 Karat (14K / 58.5%)
• 18 Karat (18K / 75%)
• 20 Karat (20K / 83.3%)
• 22 Karat (22K / 91.6%)
• 24 Karat (24K / 99.5%)
For example, 24-Karat gold, which is the purest form, will bear a hallmark "999," indicating it contains 99.9% pure gold. Similarly, 22-Karat gold will have a hallmark "916," meaning it consists of 91.6% pure gold and 8.4% other alloys, such as copper or silver.
